He stared at the numbers on the panel that didn't change. The elevator was not going anywhere. Charles’s leg jiggled uncontrollably. The incessant movement was the only thing preventing him from screaming. He felt the need to get out.

"This is ridiculous," he said, his voice barely a whisper. The fluorescent lights overhead seemed to be mocking him with their unwavering brightness. The air felt thin, difficult to breathe.

He pictured his to-do list, the projects he hadn't finished. Now he was trapped here. He fought the urge to throw his phone against the wall. He needed to control himself.
